About the San Juan River

The San Juan River cuts through the heart of the Colorado Plateau exposing the history of Earth, red rock, blue sky, and green cottonwood and willows fed by the river. The night sky is filled with stars. Birdsong rises with the morning sun.

The San Juan River flows through an ever-changing landscape of canyons and flood plains as it traverses the Colorado Plateau before joining with the Colorado River. The river passes near Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings and through an area with one of the largest concentrations of rock art in the Southwest. Fossils, wildlife and wildflowers are abundant along the river, making the San Juan River corridor an ideal outdoor classroom and recreational destination.
